BALANCE DISORDERS AND
REDUCED MOBILITY

CONTACT USBOOK ONLINE NOW

Many elderly people suffer from reduced mobility and balance. They are unable to walk as far, for as long without feeling unsteady, getting tired, or getting aches and pains. This can be due to a health condition such as stroke, arthritis, heart disease, or osteoporosis sometimes there is no pre-existing health condition.

Balance problems are among the most common reasons that older adults seek help from a doctor.

They are often caused by disturbances of the inner ear. Vertigo, the feeling that you or the things around you are spinning, is a common symptom.

Having good balance means being able to control and maintain your body’s position, whether you are moving or remaining still. Good balance helps you walk without staggering, get up from a chair without falling, climb stairs without tripping, and bend over without falling. Good balance is important to help you get around, stay independent, and carry out daily activities.

Poor levels of balance can impact on a person both physically and psychologically. It can impact on a person’s confidence and self-belief and ultimately lead to social isolation.

Our Approach

Our physiotherapists will assess muscle strength, range of movement, balance and will formulate a problem list and treatment plan. At The Waterfall we carry out in-depth balance assessments to determine the cause of the balance or mobility problem. We also use the balance force plate to determine stability levels in standing.

Treatment Plan

Depending on the individual’s problems, a treatment plan for an elderly relative with mobility problems may include:

  • In and out of bed practice
  • Sit to stand practice
  • Muscle strengthening exercises
  • Walking practice
  • Trial of variety of walking aids and equipment
  • Functional electrical stimulation (FES)
  • Orthotics and splints
  • Body weight supported gait training
  • Standing balance exercises
  • Provision of home exercise program
  • Falls advice and education
  • Training to family and carers

The individual will be taught a variety of exercises which will increase muscle strength, improve balance and co-ordination. It is important that the exercises are completed regularly at home.

I was recently in hospital and on discharge home my mobility and balance were very poor. Johanne came to my house and looked at my balance. She gave me simple exercises to do and explained how I could get back to my previous walking levels. Johanne was very understanding and without her help and encouragement I would not have regained my mobility and confidence
