Ataxia is a neurological disorder caused by damage to parts of the nervous system which control movement and balance. This causes uncoordinated movement of the muscles in the body.

Ataxia is the main symptom of a group of neurological disorders called cerebellar ataxias. Ataxia is also a symptom of many neurological disorders including stroke, head injury, multiple sclerosis, and cerebral palsy.

Ataxia affects people in different ways as there are different types of ataxia with varying degrees and symptoms.

Symptoms of ataxia include:

  • Difficulty in standing and walking due to poor balance.
  • Poor coordination of the arms and legs
  • Difficulty with writing and eating due to impaired coordination and involuntary shaking
  • Difficulty with speech and swallowing.
  • Slow eye movements and dizziness

Our Approach

Physiotherapy is important for people with ataxia and the specialist neurological physiotherapists at The Waterfall Clinic are experienced in treating people with this condition.

At The Waterfall Clinic, we understand that each patient with ataxia has different difficulties so our specialised treatment is suited to your individual needs. Our neurological physiotherapists will teach you exercises based on everyday activities, whilst improving strength, coordination, balance, and quality of movement. We also use our overhead hoist system to provide body weight-supported gait training, so you feel safe and supported during treatment.

Treatment Plan

Physiotherapy treatment for ataxia is focused around:

Increasing control of movement of the arms, legs and trunk

  • Improving balance
  • Improving posture
  • Improving walking
  • Promoting independence

We can use the FitMi and blazepods within the treatment sessions to improve visual targeting and feedback but more importantly to add a bit of fun to the treatment sessions.

BOOK AN APPOINTMENTADDITIONAL INFO

I was diagnosed with a functional neurological disorder last year and had great difficulty walking and controlling my movements. I cannot thank Johanne enough for all the help and support she has given me over the past year. I am now back at work something I thought I would never be able to do again
